Delay Repay — UK Train Compensation

Delay Repay is the UK's train compensation scheme. It entitles you to claim a portion of your fare when your train is delayed, starting from as little as 15 minutes. The amount depends on the operator: most pay 25% for 15-29 minute delays and 50% for 30-59 minutes, with full refunds for delays over 60 or 120 minutes.

Unlike the EU system, Delay Repay is administered individually by each UK train operating company, though the Department for Transport sets minimum standards. Most operators now offer Delay Repay 15 (compensation from 15-minute delays) rather than the older 30-minute threshold.

Avanti West Coast, LNER, Eurostar, and most other UK operators are covered. You must claim directly with the operator that ran the delayed service, using their app, website, or paper form. Claims must typically be submitted within 28 days.

How to claim

  1. Note the delay: check the departure board or app for the official delay record.
  2. Keep your ticket: you need proof of purchase and travel.
  3. Submit within 28 days: use the operator's Delay Repay portal or the TrainOwed service.
  4. Receive payment: most operators pay via bank transfer, PayPal, or rail vouchers.

Common questions

Which UK operators run Delay Repay?
All mainline UK operators including Avanti West Coast, LNER, CrossCountry, and Eurostar. London commuter services also have their own versions.
Does Delay Repay cover strikes?
Most UK operators include strike delays in Delay Repay, unlike the old EU rules. Check your specific operator's terms.
Can I claim for a season ticket?
Yes. The compensation is calculated based on the daily cost of your season ticket for the journey affected.
What if I miss a connection?
If you bought through tickets and missed a connection because of the first delayed train, the total delay to your final destination is what counts.
Is Delay Repay the same as EU 2021/782?
No. Delay Repay is the UK domestic scheme. EU 2021/782 covers international and EU domestic trains. The thresholds and rules differ.
