Train Cancellation Compensation
If your train is cancelled, EU Regulation 2021/782 gives you a choice: a full refund of your ticket price, or rebooking on the next available service at no extra cost. You are also entitled to meals and refreshments if the wait exceeds 60 minutes, and accommodation if an overnight stay is necessary.
Train cancellation rights under EU 2021/782 are clear. The operator must offer you the choice between a full refund and rebooking. You do not have to accept a voucher instead of a cash refund, though you may choose one if you prefer.
If the cancellation causes you to arrive at your destination more than 60 minutes late, you are also entitled to delay compensation on top of any rebooking costs.
For journeys that started before the cancellation was announced, operators must provide meals, drinks, and accommodation where necessary.
How to claim
- At the station: ask for written confirmation of the cancellation and the reason given.
- Choose your option: decide between a full refund or rebooking on the next service.
- Claim extras: if you waited over 60 minutes, keep receipts for meals and drinks.
- Submit via TrainOwed: we handle the claim and any follow-up with the operator.
