Common questions about Deutsche Bahn compensation
How do I claim Deutsche Bahn compensation?
You can claim online at bahn.de/fahrgastrechte, at any DB Service Point, or by post using the DB Fahrgastrechte form. You need your ticket and proof of delay. Submit within 90 days of travel. The online form is available in English and accepts scanned tickets or screenshots of e-tickets.
How long does Deutsche Bahn take to process my claim?
Deutsche Bahn is legally required to respond within 30 days under EU Regulation 2021/782. In practice, online claims are often processed in 10-14 days. Payment is made by SEPA bank transfer or, if you prefer, as a DB voucher (Gutschein). You can request cash even if DB initially offers a voucher — this is your legal right.
Can I claim if Deutsche Bahn blames a strike?
Yes. Under EU Regulation 2021/782, strikes by DB staff are not force majeure. DB cannot refuse your compensation claim by citing an industrial action by its own workers. This changed under the 2021 regulation, which removed the broad extraordinary circumstances exemption that existed under the old 2007 rules.
What if Deutsche Bahn rejects my claim?
If DB rejects your claim, you can escalate for free to the Bundesnetzagentur (the German Federal Network Agency), which handles rail passenger rights complaints. You can also use the söp (Schlichtungsstelle öffentlicher Personenverkehr), Germany's transport ombudsman, which is free to use and binding on DB. TrainOwed handles escalations on your behalf.
Does Deutsche Bahn offer automatic compensation?
No. DB does not automatically detect eligible delays and pay compensation. You must actively submit a claim. BahnCard 100 and certain subscription holders may receive proactive outreach, but compensation for regular ticket holders is never automatic. Submit your claim within 90 days — do not wait.
Can I claim Deutsche Bahn compensation with a BahnCard discount ticket?
Yes. Compensation is based on the price you actually paid, including any BahnCard discount. If you paid EUR 29 for a Sparpreis with your BahnCard, your 60-minute delay entitles you to 25% of EUR 29, which is EUR 7.25. DB cannot base the calculation on the undiscounted fare.
What happens if I missed a connection because of a Deutsche Bahn delay?
If you held a single through-ticket and missed a connection due to a DB delay, the total delay to your final destination is what counts. If you arrived at your final destination 60 minutes or more late, you can claim even if the initial delay was shorter. DB is responsible for the entire journey on a single ticket.
Can I claim for a Deutsche Bahn regional or S-Bahn train?
EU Regulation 2021/782 covers most DB long-distance services (ICE, IC/EC). Regional trains and S-Bahn services are often operated by DB Regio and may fall under German state contracts rather than EU regulation. In many cases, regional delay compensation is handled separately through the respective state transport authority (Verkehrsverbund). TrainOwed will identify the correct scheme for your journey.
Does Deutsche Bahn compensate in cash or vouchers?
DB will offer a Gutschein (voucher) by default, but you have the legal right to request a cash payment instead. Under EU Regulation 2021/782, compensation must be paid in money unless you explicitly choose a voucher. If DB only offers a voucher and you want cash, reply to their email stating this preference before cashing or using the voucher.
I lost my DB ticket. Can I still claim?
If you booked online or through the DB Navigator app, your booking is saved in your account. Log in at bahn.de or in the app and download a copy of your booking confirmation. For paper tickets, you can request a journey certificate (Fahrtnachweis) from any DB Service Point on the day of travel as evidence of your journey.
