Sweden and the Netherlands both apply EU Regulation 2021/782 in full, giving rail passengers the same core rights as anywhere else in the EU. Both countries have additional quirks worth knowing before you claim.
Sweden — SJ and MTRX
SJ (Swedish State Railways)
On-time rate: 68.5% | Annual payout: SEK 112M | Claim: sj.se/kundservice/forseningar-och-ersattning
SJ is Sweden's national railway and the largest long-distance operator. It runs the Stockholm–Gothenburg and Stockholm–Malmö corridors, plus connections to Norway and Denmark. At 68.5% on-time in 2024, SJ underperforms significantly — roughly one in three journeys is delayed.
The primary cause of SJ delays is Sweden's ageing rail infrastructure. The single-track sections on several main corridors create knock-on cascades when a single service is late. Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration), which owns the infrastructure, has identified this as a systemic issue — capacity upgrades are planned but will take years.
Under EU 2021/782:
- 60–119 min delay: 25% of your SJ ticket price
- 120+ min delay: 50% of your SJ ticket price
- Claim deadline: 90 days
How to claim SJ compensation:
- Go to sj.se and sign in or navigate to Customer Service → Delays and Compensation
- Enter your booking reference and the delay duration
- SJ calculates the compensation amount automatically based on your ticket price
- Submit and choose direct deposit or SJ credit
- SJ responds within 30 days
SJ also accepts claims by phone (+46 771 75 75 75) and in person at SJ customer service desks at major stations.
SJ night trains: SJ operates night trains on Stockholm–Narvik, Stockholm–Östersund, and other northern routes. Night train delays are covered by EU 2021/782, including berth and couchette supplements.
MTRX
MTRX (MTR Express) operates on the Stockholm–Gothenburg corridor in competition with SJ. Like SJ, MTRX is covered by EU 2021/782. Claims go through mtrx.se — the process mirrors SJ's but is handled separately by MTRX.
Stockholm–Gothenburg is Sweden's most delayed corridor. Both SJ and MTRX serve this route and both are regularly late — infrastructure constraints affect all operators simultaneously.
Can you claim if Trafikverket caused the delay?
Yes. Under EU law, SJ is responsible for your journey regardless of whether the delay was caused by SJ's trains or by Trafikverket infrastructure. SJ cannot reject your claim by blaming the infrastructure manager.

The Netherlands — NS and Intercity Direct
NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen)
On-time rate: 81.3% | Annual payout: EUR 19M | Claim: ns.nl/klantenservice/compensatie
NS is the Netherlands' main passenger rail operator, carrying 400 million passengers per year. At 81.3% on-time, NS performs better than most European counterparts — but with high passenger density, delays still affect millions of journeys annually.
NS has one of Europe's most passenger-friendly automatic compensation systems:
- Season card (OV-chipkaart abonnement) holders: receive automatic compensation for delays over 15 minutes — no manual claim needed
- Single-journey passengers: must claim manually within 90 days
For manual claims:
- Go to ns.nl or use the NS app
- Sign in and navigate to Customer Service → Compensation
- Enter your journey details and delay duration
- NS requires a Dutch IBAN for bank transfer — international passengers can request a SWIFT transfer or accept NS credit
- Response within 30 days
Intercity Direct (IC Direct)
Intercity Direct is NS's premium service connecting Amsterdam Centraal with Rotterdam Centraal and Breda via the high-speed HSL-Zuid line. It carries a supplement on top of the standard NS fare.
IC Direct is covered by EU 2021/782. The supplement is included in the compensable ticket price — if your IC Direct ticket cost €28 (including the €2.90 supplement) and arrived 90 minutes late, you claim 25% of €28 = €7.
NS Reisgarantie — beyond EU law
NS operates a voluntary Reisgarantie (travel guarantee) for season card holders. Under Reisgarantie:
- Delays of 15+ minutes: automatically credited to your OV-chipkaart account
- No manual claim needed — compensation applied at the tap-out gate
This goes beyond EU 2021/782's 60-minute threshold. Dutch season card commuters are among the best-protected rail passengers in Europe.
Claiming NS in English
NS's website (ns.nl) is primarily in Dutch, but the customer service section can be switched to English. International passengers without a Dutch IBAN should contact NS customer service directly via chat or email to arrange an international payment method.

Spain — Renfe
For completeness: Renfe in Spain has the most generous voluntary compensation policy in Europe. AVE delays of over 5 minutes trigger a 50% refund; over 15 minutes trigger a 100% refund under Renfe's Punctuality Guarantee — more generous than EU 2021/782 at any delay length. Spain's AVE network also achieves 87.4% on-time, the highest of any operator in this guide.
Claim at renfe.com/en within 90 days. Renfe's Punctuality Guarantee is largely automatic for AVE tickets — check your booking email for credit notifications after delays.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I claim SJ compensation if Trafikverket (not SJ) caused the delay?
Yes. EU 2021/782 makes SJ responsible for your journey regardless of whether the delay was caused by SJ's trains or by Trafikverket's infrastructure. SJ cannot refuse your claim by blaming the track.
Does NS offer automatic compensation in the Netherlands?
Yes, for OV-chipkaart season card (abonnement) holders. NS automatically detects delays and applies compensation to your card for delays of 15 minutes or more. Single-journey passengers must claim manually within 90 days.
How do I claim SJ compensation in English?
Go to sj.se and switch to English. Alternatively, call SJ customer service at +46 771 75 75 75. SJ accepts claims in English by phone and email.
Does the Intercity Direct supplement count toward NS compensation?
Yes. EU 2021/782 compensation is based on the full ticket price including the IC Direct supplement. Both the standard NS fare and the supplement are included in the compensable amount.
Are MTRX trains covered by EU compensation law?
Yes. MTRX (MTR Express) operates on the Stockholm–Gothenburg corridor and is fully covered by EU Regulation 2021/782. Claims go through mtrx.se — separately from SJ.
What is the deadline to claim SJ or NS compensation?
90 days for both SJ and NS under their own terms. EU Regulation 2021/782 gives you one year from the date of travel. Filing sooner is always recommended.
